Manuela Madeira

Manuela Madeira is a visual artist based in Ireland. Originally from Mozambique, Manuela is a figurative and abstract painter often working in oils and mixed media.

In her figurative work, she explores how traditional values and practices are often questioned in our everyday lives.

Recently, she has been experimenting a more abstract technique to capture the mysterious and almost mystical nature of the undersea environment along Ireland's southern coast – its shifting shapes and complex multi-hued palettes. Using archival material and photos taken during summer sailings trips to west Cork, Manuela uses inks, acrylics and oils to create layers of texture and colours.

Manuela has exhibited in Ireland, Italy and Belgium and has had recent solo exhibitions at the Fundacao Fernando Leite Couto in Mozambique and Akazi!ATL in Atlanta, USA.

Manuela is a founding member of the Eisil Contemporary art collective, based in Co. Waterford, Ireland and is a member of Mor Artists Collective, and contributing artist to the Nua Collective visual arts exhibition platform. Manuela holds a Master’s degree in Art & Process from the Crawford College of Art & Design in Cork, and Master’s degree in social Anthropology from the University of Manchester in the UK. She has also attended the Rhok art academy in Brussels, Belgium, where she lived and worked for a number of years.
